In 1990 the Orange Mound Parade Committee (OMPC) was formed to "honor/salute" the efforts of Fred Jones and the (then) newly formed/organized Southern Heritage Classic (SHC)! The Southern Heritage Classic has attracted thousands to come back to Memphis (Tennessee) not just to cheer on historically black college rival football teams Tennessee State University and Jackson State University or tee off in the celebrity golf tournament but to also experience music, lively tailgate parties and witness some of the world’s most beautiful women (and women’s fashions)!
Part of that experience is along Park Avenue from Haynes to Airways featuring area high school marching bands, college/university bands, school/civic organizations, businesses, gospel/ministry and political/public servant entrants! In addition to since 1997 the OMPC has also hosted several Just like the Southern Heritage Classic (which connects kindred spirits young and old in celebration of the beauty of cultural diversity and the richness of Memphis’ heritage) … in Orange Mound and have (had) evolved into experiences for the entire family! In 2012 Southern Heritage Classic founder Fred Jones announced that Tennessee State and Jackson State agreed to reserve the second Saturday in September for each other at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium through the 2019 season! Jones said.
The summer of 2018 ushered in a new organizational name change the Orange Mound CommUNITY Parade Committee (OMCPC) with stronger emphasis on within the Orange Mound community! For Orange Mound we the Orange Mound CommUNITY Parade Committee look forward to continue providing A Premier Event among the many events! However, we can only continue to do so with significant financial, sponsor, services, marketing, vendor, participant and community support.
